Korea Post under the Ministry of Science and ICT will issue 528,000 "Kim Gu 150th Birth Anniversary" commemorative stamps on Aug. 28, it said on Wednesday.
Kim Gu led the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and spearheaded the anti-Japanese independence struggle. After liberation, he worked to establish an independent, self-reliant state.
The stamp features a portrait of Kim taken in Chongqing, China in 1942. It places a passage from "Baekbeom Ilji" on a silver background. The commemorative postmark uses the line, "I wish our country to become the most beautiful country in the world," from "My Wish" in "Baekbeom Ilji".
This year, the government designated a "UNESCO commemorative year" to mark that Kim's idea of "peace through culture" aligns with values pursued by UNESCO. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will run a "Culture Week" from Aug. 25 to 30 to mark the occasion. From Aug. 26 to 30, the Kim Gu commemorative stamp will also be displayed at Gwanghwamun Square.
Korea Post chief Park In-hwan (박인환) said it would be an opportunity to honor Kim's life, devoted to Korea's independence and the nation's future, and his spirit of seeking world peace through the "power of culture."
