IKEA released a teaser video hinting at a collaboration with Microsoft’s Xbox. Specific products or prices have not been disclosed, but attention is focusing on the possibility of a new tie-up combining gaming consoles and furniture.
According to IT outlet Engadget on Aug. 19 local time, IKEA posted a short video on Aug. 18 on its official Instagram account hinting at a collaboration with Xbox.
Instead of showing the full product, the video opens with extreme close-ups. A furniture part shaped like an Xbox controller thumbstick appears on screen, followed by a cushion bearing a green Xbox logo.
For now, the identity of the actual product has not been confirmed. Neither IKEA nor Xbox has released specific information such as the name, price or launch schedule of any collaboration product. All that can be confirmed is that a teaser video hinting at a tie-up between the two brands has been released.
Interest is growing because of the timing. It comes ahead of Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, next week. Xbox is scheduled to reveal related news in two broadcasts on Aug. 26 and 27, and the possibility has been raised that details of the IKEA collaboration could also be disclosed during that period.
Clues in the video are also fueling interest that it could go beyond simple branded goods and lead to actual furniture products. With the thumbstick-like furniture part and the Xbox-logo cushion appearing together, some predict the collaboration could expand to items such as chairs, sofas and desks aimed at gaming spaces.
This remains speculation. Based on the video released so far, it is difficult to determine what product category will appear, or even whether it will be a product for sale.
This is not the first time Xbox has collaborated beyond gaming into everyday living. About 5 years ago, Xbox introduced an Xbox mini refrigerator using its gaming brand, attempting to combine games and household goods. If the IKEA collaboration materialises, it could become a new example of expanding into furniture and interior design.
In the end, the key is Gamescom next week. The first point to watch is whether IKEA and Xbox will unveil an actual collaboration product and, if they do, whether it is gaming furniture or a simple accessory.
For now, only something resembling a thumbstick and a green Xbox cushion have been revealed. Details of how the two brands will combine gaming and furniture are expected to be confirmed in a follow-up announcement.
