Woori Bank will support an English translation of novelist Park Kyung-ni’s landmark work, "Land", along with a special exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of her birth.
The bank signed a business agreement with the Toji Cultural Foundation to cooperate on cultural projects at Woori Bank’s history hall "Woori1899" and delivered a donation, it said on Tuesday.
Park worked in 1954, before her literary debut, at the Yongsan branch of Commercial Bank, a predecessor of Woori Bank. At the time, she published a long poem titled "Sea and Sky" under her real name, Park Geum-yi, in the bank’s in-house magazine "Cheonil". After leaving the job, she also contributed the short story "Jeonsaengrok" to the magazine.
Under the agreement, Woori Bank will sponsor an English translation and publication project for Park’s "Land". A special prize is also set to be awarded at this year’s Park Kyung-ni Literary Award to a person who contributed to the development of Korean literature.
Woori Bank’s history hall "Woori1899" in the basement of its headquarters will host a "Park Kyung-ni Special Exhibition" through Sept. 18. It will show early works published in the in-house magazine during her time at Commercial Bank, along with personal items, free of charge.
Jung Jin-wan (정진완), chief executive of Woori Bank, said, "We will actively support Park Kyung-ni’s literary legacy, which has a special connection with Woori Bank, so it can spread to the world."
