All members of South Korea's delegation to the International Olympiad in Informatics won medals.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity said on Tuesday that all members of the South Korean team won medals at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from Aug. 9 to 16.
A total of 375 students from 92 countries took part. Min-chan Jeong (정민찬), a third-year student at Korea Science Academy, and Seung-min Yang (양승민), a third-year student at Seondeok High School, won gold medals for South Korea. Jae-woo Byun (변재우), a third-year student at Gyeonggi Science High School, won a silver medal, while Jae-won Son (손재원), a second-year student at Seoul Science High School, took bronze.
The International Olympiad in Informatics is held over 2 days, with contestants solving 3 computer programming problems per day over 5 hours, for a total of 6 problems. The total score is 600 points, with 100 points per problem.
Contest problems are selected through a call for submissions from participating countries. This year, 2 problems submitted by South Korea, including "Tiling Game" and "Partition," were adopted, along with problems submitted by Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia. Topic areas include tree structures, optimal matching and complexity theory. The full set of 6 problems consisted of Marble Machine, Memorial Tower, Tiling Game, Partition, Magic City and Classroom Game.
Sung-yeol Kim (김성열), head of the Korea Olympiad in Informatics Committee, said, "I am glad that all members of the South Korean delegation received awards and were able to wrap up the competition with strong results." He said, "I am proud of the passion and skills the students showed on the world stage, and I look forward to their future achievements."
Following this International Olympiad in Informatics, the South Korean delegation will compete in the International Earth Science Olympiad, scheduled to be held from Aug. 20 to 27. It then plans to take part in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics and the International Junior Science Olympiad in turn.
