The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is reviewing new rules that would apply to some crypto-related investment contracts. Cointelegraph reported on Monday that the SEC will hold an open meeting this week to discuss introducing a new offering framework tailored to investment contracts linked to specific crypto assets.
The meeting comes after the U.S. Congress failed to move forward with a bill on crypto market structure. The Senate did not pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY) last week. The bill had drawn attention as legislation to comprehensively organize how financial regulators oversee cryptocurrencies.
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said the SEC is ready to roll out rules related to digital assets if the Senate fails to pass the CLARITY bill before the recess. It remains unclear, however, how far the SEC can set regulations without legislation from Congress.
The CLARITY bill is not fully off the table. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (존 튠) said lawmakers plan to pursue a motion to invoke cloture on the CLARITY bill after they return from recess on Sept. 14. The bill must pass the full Senate, then go back through the House, and ultimately be signed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
