The scale of the Coupang data leak expanded sharply from earlier reports, prompting the government to form a joint public-private investigation team.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Personal Information Protection Commission announced Coupang’s incident response plan on the 29th.

Coupang had said on the 19th that information such as customer names, emails and addresses from 4,536 accounts was leaked, but the investigation found information leaked from more than 30 million accounts.

The ministry decided to form a joint investigation team from the 30th, citing the seriousness of the large leak and concerns about further harm to the public. It will analyse the cause and prepare measures to prevent a recurrence.

The Personal Information Protection Commission received two breach reports from Coupang on the 20th and the 29th. It plans strict sanctions if it finds violations of safety obligations after a swift investigation.

The ministry and the commission also issued a public security notice on the Boho Nara website to prevent secondary damage such as smishing using leaked information.
