Alphabet-owned drone delivery company Wing is expanding its collaboration with Walmart and will offer drone delivery services at 150 stores, TechCrunch reported on Saturday.
The service will be based on Wing's existing operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta areas and will be rolled out in phases through 2027. Wing's new chief business officer, Heather Rivera, said customer usage is rising and the top 25 percent of users use drone delivery more than 3 times a week.
Wing announced in June last year it would start drone delivery in Houston, Orlando, Tampa and Charlotte, and it will begin full operations in Houston from Jan. 15. Once the expansion is complete, Wing will operate at a total of 270 stores, including in Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Miami, covering about 10 percent of the U.S. population.
Wing first partnered with Walmart in 2023, starting a pilot at 2 stores in the Dallas area before expanding to 18 supercenters. Wing is now moving into full commercial operations through its collaboration with Walmart and recently completed commercial flights of a larger drone capable of carrying 5 pounds, about 2.3 kg. Rivera said Wing is focusing on expanding services within Walmart stores and integrating operations, and plans to scale through store clustering in the future, as it has done in Atlanta.
