XRP Ledger (XRPL) is pursuing an upgrade to move the multisignature transaction approval process on-chain.
A blockchain media outlet, U.Today, reported on Aug. 5 local time that the proposal, dubbed On-Chain Cosigner, was submitted to the XRP Ledger Standards repository.
At the core is how multisig transactions are coordinated. If the proposal is adopted after a revision process, signers would be able to complete approvals directly within XRP Ledger without external communications channels or a central coordinator. Currently, a transaction must first be created and manually distributed to each authority holder, and signatures must then be collected through external channels such as email.
The proposal was written by Sean Xie (션 시에), Zhiyuan Wang (즈위안 왕), Chenna Keshava B S (첸나 케샤바 B S) and Mayuka Badari (마유카 바다리). Vet (벳), a member of the XRPL community, pointed to limitations in the current structure, saying, "On most chains and on the XRP Ledger, multisigners need to coordinate and collect signatures off-chain or via smart contracts." He added, "This proposal seeks to add on-chain multisig coordination as a native feature, a fully decentralised approach."
XRP Ledger already supports multisig transactions, but the existing method still depends on an off-chain coordination process. Transactions must be distributed to each signer separately and signatures then gathered again, which can create the 'last mile' problem cited in the proposal. If a coordinator loses collected signatures or goes offline, the signing process itself can fail.
Under the new structure, a participant first creates a TransactionProposal object directly on XRP Ledger. The object permanently stores an immutable transaction payload on-chain. Each subsequently submitted signature is immediately verified and added sequentially to an approval list. Ultimately, anyone can copy the completed transaction and submit it through XRP Ledger's normal transaction process. There is no need to reassemble signatures again.
The proposal particularly targets corporate and institutional demand. It states that the feature is designed to work in a complementary way with XLS-56 batch transactions, fee and reserve sponsorship functions, and future lending protocol operations. It is read as aiming to increase usefulness in environments such as institutional custody or corporate payments where approval authority is distributed among multiple parties.
A key point to watch is whether it passes the revision process. Because XRP Ledger already provides multisig itself, the significance of the proposal lies less in adding a function than in changing the structure for coordinating approvals. If it can reduce reliance on off-chain communication and central coordinators, XRP Ledger's enterprise workflows could become simpler.
