[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] Strategy Chairman Michael Saylor said he has not sold any of his personal bitcoin holdings after the company announced a bitcoin sale.
CoinPost, a blockchain media outlet, reported on Monday that Saylor drew a line on X, formerly Twitter, saying the company’s sale is separate from assets in his personal wallet.
Saylor’s explanation came after Strategy disclosed its third bitcoin sale of the year the previous day. He said his remarks urging people not to sell bitcoin were made from the perspective of a bitcoin holder to other holders. He added that he has never sold bitcoin and even said he "did not sell 1 satoshi."
Saylor also made clear who actually sold. "The one that sold was the listed company Strategy, not my personal wallet," he said. He separated company-level cash management from personal investment decisions.
Strategy said in an 8-K filing submitted on Aug. 3 that it sold 1,638 BTC from July 27 to Aug. 2 to raise $104.73 million. After the sale, the company’s bitcoin holdings fell to 842,138 BTC. It was the third sale this year, following sales of 32 BTC in late May and 3,588 BTC from June 29 to July 5.
Saylor also said the company has, since the early days of starting bitcoin investment in 2020, kept open the possibility of trading for capital management purposes and has disclosed that. He stressed that the company’s bitcoin operations have not departed from its existing policy. He said confidence in bitcoin remains unchanged for both the company and him personally.
The uses of the funds raised this time were also already disclosed. Of the $104.73 million, $52.4 million was used for preferred dividend funding and $52.3 million was used to buy back STRC shares. Strategy also raised funds through a separate at-the-market share issuance and increased its dollar reserves to $4 billion.
As a result, the core issue is less whether Saylor personally holds bitcoin than that Strategy is managing its capital structure by selling some bitcoin when needed even under a long-term holding stance. Saylor said he is maintaining his personal holdings, but Strategy is continuing operations that involve selling bitcoin to fund dividends, share buybacks and expanded cash-like reserves.
