U.S. robot developer Boston Dynamics plans to deploy its humanoid robot, Atlas, at a Hyundai Motor plant within two years. It highlighted the robot's ability to quickly learn new tasks.
Business Insider reported on Jan. 9 that Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter said, "To deploy Atlas in line with our goals, we have to achieve several milestones, including rapid learning." He said, "For that, we have to make it able to perform new tasks within a day or two."
Atlas is a 6-foot, 200-pound biped robot, and Hyundai plans to place it at its plant in Ellabell, Georgia by 2028. Playter said, "To be a useful robot in a factory, it has to be able to perform more than 100 tasks." He stressed that "AI will make that possible."
To that end, Boston Dynamics is working with Google DeepMind, and it expects AI to speed up Atlas' learning and enable collaboration with humans. In the early stages, it plans to carry out simple tasks such as sorting car parts, and gradually expand to assembly work.
