SSI, an AI research lab founded by Ilya Sutskever (일리야 수츠케버), has signed a long-term partnership agreement with Nvidia and gained access to the next-generation GPU platform, Vera Rubin. TechCrunch reported on July 27 local time that the deal also includes an undisclosed investment. Nvidia’s investment in SSI is reported to be in the billions of dollars.

The partnership will allow SSI to expand its computing resources for research. Nvidia said SSI has already achieved meaningful research milestones and that it struck the computing partnership after gaining unusual access to SSI’s private research to accelerate the company’s next stage of growth. Sutskever said SSI has research worth scaling, and access to large Nvidia computers will enable it to execute on that work.

SSI has continued its work in private for 2 years since its founding. It is focusing on developing safely aligned artificial intelligence superintelligence rather than launching commercial products or generating short-term revenue.

Sutskever co-developed AlexNet with Alex Krizhevsky and Geoffrey Hinton, and later led OpenAI’s disbanded Superalignment team. He left the company months after an attempt to oust Sam Altman failed.

According to PitchBook, SSI has raised $7 billion so far and was valued at $32 billion after the investment. Investors include Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, Lightspeed Venture Partners, GV and Sequoia Capital Partners.
