[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] AI computing technology company Nvidia said on July 27 it will use the Nvidia Vera CPU to accelerate next-generation CPU and GPU design.

Nvidia said it is optimising key electronic design automation (EDA) applications with Cadence and Synopsys, and early tests showed up to 1.5 times higher performance for major verification and simulation workloads.

According to the company, Nvidia is rolling out Vera across EDA workflows used to develop next-generation CPUs and GPUs. It said this shows that high-performance CPU architecture can also accelerate engineering workloads.

If EDA workloads are accelerated, the pace of industrial technology development that uses them can also speed up. GPUs and AI have accelerated multiple areas of chip design, but some key EDA workloads still rely heavily on CPU performance. Logic simulation, formal verification and some parts of digital implementation often require high single-core performance, an efficient memory system and high overall throughput.

Nvidia emphasised that CPU architecture is an important factor in determining how quickly engineering teams can validate designs and proceed with product development.
