LG Uplus will hold a running event with the National Fire Agency to honour firefighters who died in the line of duty and support their families.

LG Uplus said on July 27 it will hold the U+119 Memorial Run 2026 on Oct. 17 at Sejong Central Park.

Now in its second year, the U+119 Memorial Run is an event in which participants run to remember the sacrifice of fallen firefighters and express gratitude. Participation fees will be used in full to support bereaved families of firefighters who died in the line of duty. Last year’s event drew about 2,000 members of the public and about 300 family members of firefighters. The fees were delivered to Fire Family Hope Sharing, a group for bereaved families, and used for memorial activities and support.

Participants run wearing bibs showing their name, a fallen firefighter’s name and the date of death. The courses consist of 11.9 km, symbolising firefighting, and 5 km that family and friends can join. The fee is 50,000 won and applications can be made through the official U+119 Memorial Run website. Participants can leave memorial messages to fallen firefighters during the application process. The collected messages will be unveiled on site on the day of the event.

At last year’s event, participants performed a salute to the national flag using the voices of fallen firefighters restored through AI voice synthesis technology.

The audio was produced based on the voices of the late Fire Sergeant Kim Soo-kwang (김수광), who died in January 2024 at a fire suppression site in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, and the late Firefighter Park Dan-bi (박단비), who died in a helicopter crash while transporting an emergency patient from Dokdo in 2019.

Park Kyung-joong (박경중), executive director in charge of external cooperation at LG Uplus, said, "I hope the culture of remembering the noble sacrifice of firefighters who devoted themselves to the life and safety of the people and conveying gratitude will spread further." He added, "We will continue activities with the National Fire Agency to support firefighting families and spread social value."
