Apple is expected to embark on a sweeping overhaul of its Mac product lineup from the end of this year, including the MacBook Pro and iMac.

Bloomberg reported on July 22, local time, that Apple is preparing to sequentially update the MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Studio from late this year through next year and into 2028.

The nearest timing is late this year. Apple is pushing to launch an entry-level MacBook Pro equipped with the M6 chip and a new iMac. It is also preparing a high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro lineup using the M5 Pro and M5 Max. The model is expected to feature a touchscreen and an OLED display, with a release window projected as between late this year and early next year.

Apple is reported to be testing the high-end MacBook Pro under macOS 27.1. The operating system has been discussed as possibly being unveiled in late October. That raises the likelihood that year-end Mac new products will bring changes in screen technology and product lineup, not just chip swaps.

A roadmap beyond next year has also emerged. Apple plans to update the MacBook Air lineup in early 2027. That year, it is also preparing a redesigned entry-level MacBook Pro model based on the M7 chip. It is also developing a MacBook Neo equipped with the A19 Pro chip. Apple is also said to be reviewing a plan to periodically change the MacBook Neo's colors.

Apple is also revamping its desktop lineup at the same time. It is testing a Mac mini lineup using the M5 Pro and a base M6 processor. The Mac Studio is in a testing phase for new models based on the M5 Max and M5 Ultra. However, the release timing and chip and memory configurations for these products depend on the supply of memory chips. It warned that schedules or detailed specifications could be adjusted depending on supply chain variables.

Over the mid to long term, expanding OLED use was presented as a key axis. Apple is preparing an OLED MacBook Air as early as 2028. It is also developing an OLED iMac, and the order is expected to come after the OLED MacBook Air. With OLED coverage in the Mac lineup currently limited, it is read as a move by Apple to broaden the screen transition across laptops and desktops.

The roadmap shows the Mac lineup is placing more weight on product segmentation and display transition than on simple performance improvements. The entry-level MacBook Pro is set to combine chip changes from the M6 to the M7 with a redesign, while high-end products seek differentiation with touchscreens and OLED. If new-name products such as the MacBook Neo are added, changes could also emerge in Mac pricing bands and positioning.

Two points will be in focus going forward. One is whether the high-end MacBook Pro expected to be released at year-end actually appears with an OLED and touchscreen combination. The other is how the memory supply situation affects Mac mini and Mac Studio schedules. As Apple is preparing Mac changes over multiple years, attention is also on the cadence of launches by product and its chip allocation strategy.
