KT CEO Park Yoon-young (박윤영) dismissed speculation about integrating the company’s media affiliates. He also said a merger between Tving and Wavve would require review.
Meeting reporters on July 23 after a gathering between Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon and the chief executives of the three telecom operators, Park was asked about the possibility of merging media affiliates. He said the company has various concerns as times change, but added that nothing specific has been decided.
The industry has previously raised expectations that KT is reviewing the integration of its media and content affiliates including Genie Music and Millie’s Library.
On a merger between Tving and Wavve, Park said the company has not received any official request. KT is the second-largest shareholder of Tving through its subsidiary KT Studio Genie, holding a 13.54 percent stake. Park said that if a request comes in the future, the company would review fast-changing market conditions and its interests, but nothing has been decided at present.
Park also set out a plan for a “physical AI” business. He said the company aims to use about 3,500 KT telephone exchanges nationwide as AI edge sites to provide network infrastructure needed for physical AI.
On an ongoing tax probe, Park said the company is cooperating faithfully with the National Tax Service’s investigation. He added that KT does not know what issue the authorities are investigating.
