[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] Apple may apply a new internal design that splits the battery into 2 parts in its next-generation iPhone, according to the report. Traces in iOS 27 beta code pointing to an iPhone model using multiple batteries are adding weight to earlier leaks related to an “iPhone Ultra.”

NineToFiveMac reported on Sunday, local time, that iOS 27 beta 4 is confirmed to include a string that mentions a “multi-battery iPhone model.”

The code is believed to be linked to a next-generation iPhone Ultra that Apple is said to be developing. A well-known IT tipster on China’s Weibo, Digital Chat Station, previously claimed the iPhone Ultra is highly likely to include an internal battery split into two rather than a single battery.

The discovery is being taken as a sign supporting earlier leaks. Filipe Espósito explained that traces related to the iPhone Ultra have been found multiple times in iOS 27 code. After code suggesting a possible foldable iPhone launch and content hinting at a model with multiple displays were confirmed, code mentioning a multi-battery structure has now been added, he said.

Information about battery capacity was also discussed. Regulatory documents put the two batteries expected to be used in the product at 1,921 mAh and 2,962 mAh, for a combined capacity of 4,883 mAh. If Apple applies this configuration to a commercial product, software and power-control technology to manage two physically separated batteries as a single power system are expected to be key.

Splitting a smartphone’s battery into 2 and placing them separately is a relatively familiar structure in foldable products. Because internal space is divided around the folding hinge, the approach of distributing batteries on both sides is often used.

Existing iPhones, by contrast, have adopted a single-battery structure. If the code refers to an actual product, it also raises the view that Apple is preparing a different form factor. With iOS 27 code already showing signs hinting at a foldable iPhone and multiple displays, the new multi-battery information is also being raised as a possible design for the same product.

Attention is also focused on the release timing. Leaked information so far points to the iPhone Ultra being unveiled in early September. The product name and detailed design, however, have not yet been officially confirmed. It is also unclear whether Apple will release the model as the iPhone Ultra or apply it to a foldable iPhone or another new lineup.

In the industry, the direct discovery of multi-battery-related code in an iOS 27 beta is seen as making it more likely that Apple is preparing a hardware structure different from existing iPhones from the software stage.
