Samsung Electronics has formalised robots as a next-generation core business and built a dedicated organisational structure. The company said on Monday it will establish the RX (Robotics eXperience) Business Promotion Office under the CEO.

The RX office will operate with a structure that integrates companywide robotics capabilities into a single system and drives efforts in one package, from mid- to long-term strategy to core technology development and commercialisation. It will use the Seoul R&D Campus in Umyeon-dong, Seoul, as its main base, consolidate robotics staff workplaces and continue investing to expand work infrastructure such as offices and laboratories.

It will build data infrastructure at its Gumi site. Samsung Electronics plans to set up a data factory at Gumi to provide a foundation for rapid on-site deployment of robots, and to work with research organisations at the Seoul R&D Campus to advance robot intelligence and control. Overseas, it plans to establish global research bases in the United States, China and Japan, which it described as leading countries in robot technology, to use locally specialised technologies and ecosystems and secure talent.

As a leader, Vice President Lee Dong-geon (이동건), who led robot strategy including the direction for operating Boston Dynamics at Hyundai Motor Group, was appointed head of the robotics strategy team and will be responsible for the mid- to long-term roadmap for the robot business. Kim Hyun-jin (김현진), a Seoul National University professor and an expert in intelligent autonomous robot systems and robot control, and Kim Ui-gyeom (김의겸), an Ajou University professor who researches robot hand and manipulation, are also set to join the RX office.

Samsung Electronics plans to recruit additional experts by field to build its robot commercialisation capabilities over the mid to long term. It aims to boost the speed of technology development and respond swiftly to market changes by using rapid decision-making and execution under the CEO-led structure.
