[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed expanding artificial intelligence cooperation with developing countries and urged against an excessive expansion of AI security.

CNBC reported on Thursday that Xi said at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai that countries should jointly develop AI and support developing countries.

Xi said China would offer developing countries 5,000 participation opportunities in AI education and seminar programmes. He also said China would promote AI cooperation with regional bodies including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Arab League and the African Union.

He said China is willing to respond together to opportunities and challenges in AI development with a more open attitude, practical actions and a long-term perspective. He stressed that AI development should not take the form of one country going it alone, but should become a symphony of international cooperation.

Xi also mentioned AI risk management, saying, "We must strengthen risk awareness, and AI must be safe and controllable and always under human control." He said he opposes an excessive expansion of the concept of national security in the AI sector or putting one country’s security ahead of others.

In Shanghai, 29 countries signed an agreement a day earlier on establishing the World AI Cooperation Organisation.
