Customers leaving KT after it began waiving early termination fees have topped a cumulative 150,000.
The telecom industry said on Thursday that the number of subscribers who cancelled KT service from Dec. 31, when KT began waiving the fees, through Jan. 8 totalled 154,851. It said 74.3 percent of KT customers who cancelled during the period chose SK Telecom.
Number portability totalled 53,919 on Jan. 8 alone. Of those, 24,252 were customers leaving KT. Some 15,701 moved to SK Telecom, 5,027 to LG Uplus and 3,524 to budget carriers (MVNO). The share of KT cancellations choosing SK Telecom on Jan. 8 was 64.7 percent.
Except for the first day, when the fee waiver was relatively less known, daily KT departures have held above 20,000. The industry expects cumulative KT departures to exceed 200,000 this weekend.
