Pearl Abyss released a documentary video titled "The Choices That Made Pearl Abyss, Following the Beginning" on its official YouTube channel, Pearl Crute, covering the company’s 16-year development philosophy and history.
According to Pearl Abyss on Monday, the video highlights the background to the company’s founding, established in 2010 by 7 developers with the goal of creating an environment where they could focus only on development. Pearl Abyss chairman Dae-il Kim (김대일) led development of major South Korean online games including "Ryl Online", "R2" and "C9", and won the Excellent Developer Award at the Korea Game Awards in 2009. Kim founded Pearl Abyss on the judgment that developers must decide technology and direction themselves to make high-quality games.
Pearl Abyss simultaneously developed the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) "Black Desert" and an in-house engine upon its founding. It did so on the judgment that it had to build its own development tools to implement the game it wanted.
At the time, efforts continued to improve development efficiency and quality, including animators conducting motion capture themselves and developers implementing and verifying planned scenes in real time. In the process, a collaborative culture that prioritized quality beyond job boundaries took root throughout Black Desert’s development.
After proving its MMORPG development capabilities with Black Desert, Pearl Abyss took on "Crimson Desert", a new genre as an open-world action adventure. Crimson Desert is the company’s new intellectual property and its first AAA single-player packaged game, and the technology and experience accumulated from Black Desert carried into its development.
Despite the existing "Black Desert Engine" having high completeness, it newly developed and applied a next-generation engine, the "BlackSpace Engine". This was a long-term technology investment that considered a larger-scale open world, multiple platforms and future titles to be introduced.
Crimson Desert focused on maximizing an experience in which players feel as if they are in the real world by meticulously implementing everything from the terrain of distant mountains and the movement of trees and grass to the sense of air in the space and audio.
A Pearl Abyss official said, "From our founding to in-house engine development, and from Black Desert to Crimson Desert, Pearl Abyss’ challenges are an extension of a journey to make the best games," adding, "We will continue our development philosophy to maximize player experiences."
