An assessment says Netflix is becoming more like YouTube as it expands its content beyond films and dramas to include games, live sports, podcasts and YouTube videos.

On July 10, local time, The Verge discussed Netflix’s expansion strategy on its Vergecast podcast.

Hosts said Netflix’s recent moves look somewhat hectic and perhaps slightly desperate. They said Netflix, once seen as the next thing in television, is continuing to grow its content machine by adding multiple genres and formats at once.

Another view says the expansion is not entirely unfamiliar given Netflix has long competed for users’ time. From that perspective, the company’s move beyond films and series into games, live broadcasts, audio and online video can be interpreted.

The key question is whether this move toward becoming more like YouTube will actually work. Many have tried to compete with YouTube without success, and some said Netflix could follow the path of failed streaming services.
