[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] Microsoft has started applying its in-house MAI model to some AI responses in Word and Excel. TechCrunch reported on Monday that Microsoft is lowering its reliance on OpenAI and Anthropic software in part to cut costs and is increasing use of its own models.

Microsoft has arranged for its in-house MAI model to respond to a certain share of user prompts.

Much of Microsoft 365 has been known to be based on OpenAI and Anthropic models.

It has not replaced external models. Microsoft continues to use OpenAI and Anthropic models while also expanding efforts to build its own AI agents. At its annual Build developer event last month, it unveiled 7 new MAI models, including an agentic coder and a text-to-image generator.

The adjustment is an extension of a trend toward cutting AI costs. As the cost of providing and adopting AI services rises, some Silicon Valley companies are considering Chinese models to find cheaper agentic alternatives despite security concerns.
