[Digital Today reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Apple has rolled out iOS 27 developer beta 3, fully enabling the new Siri’s customised voice features. For the first time, controls for speaking speed and expressiveness, which had appeared only in the settings menu but could not be used, have begun working. Apple Intelligence and Siri-related user interface elements were also revised.

On July 6 (local time), IT outlet 9to5Mac reported that the update is largely aimed at stabilisation ahead of this month’s public beta.

The biggest change in beta 3 is that the new Siri voice settings have been implemented as an actual function. In iOS 27 beta 1 and beta 2, sliders for speaking speed and expressiveness appeared in the Siri voice menu but were disabled. In beta 3, the feature is enabled, allowing users to adjust speed and expressiveness in five levels for each of the two available Siri voices.

The setup method has also been made more intuitive. When users move a slider, Siri immediately plays a voice sample, and changes in speaking speed and emotional expression are reflected in real time each time a value changes. Once a user finds the desired setting, it can be saved by pressing the confirm button at the top right.

Apple unveiled the new Siri in the WWDC26 keynote, introducing it as allowing users to personalise voice far more finely than before. At the time, Siri engineering chief Mike Rockwell (마이크 록웰), a vice president, demonstrated the speed and expressiveness controls and presented them as one of the key changes in the new Siri.

The feature has been assessed as significantly expanding the personalisation experience because it goes beyond simply selecting a voice type and lets users directly adjust rhythm and emotional expression within the same voice. The settings apply not only to Siri but are also reflected in system voices such as Apple Maps and Safari, providing a more consistent voice experience.

Beta 3 also includes changes related to Apple Intelligence. On some devices, the update from beta 2 to beta 3 was changed to require downloading Apple Intelligence-related assets again, and in the process, new Siri access permissions may be temporarily reset. The Camera app added a notice saying an updated Siri is needed, and the text indexing item in the Settings app was changed to "Optimizing Search and Siri" to more clearly show progress in search and Siri optimisation.

Other changes include a redesigned Reminders app icon, and macOS 27 Golden Gate added a new Golden Gate Bridge wallpaper.

Apple Intelligence and new Siri features are not available on all devices. iOS 27 itself supports iPhone 11 and later models and iPhone SE second generation and later devices, but Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, can be used only on the latest hardware.

Apple is currently working through the developer beta to improve feature completeness ahead of the public beta release. The public beta is expected to be distributed this month, and the official version is expected to be unveiled in September alongside the next iPhone. Beta 3 has been assessed as the first update to show iOS 27’s artificial intelligence experience in earnest by switching the new Siri’s customised voice feature into a usable state.
