As summer pests continue to spread, consumer demand for insect-blocking and pest-control products is rising noticeably. Interior platform OZIN said on Tuesday that searches for “bug blocking” over the past three weeks from June 1 to 21 surged 70 percent from the previous comparable period.
Over the same period, pest-related keywords such as “bug repeller” and “bug extermination” also rose across the board, up 68 percent and 22 percent, respectively. The move comes as local governments activate emergency pest-control systems during peak outbreaks of the “lovebug” (red-backed velvet fly) and as pest activity by mosquitoes and flies increases with longer spells of hot, humid weather due to climate change.
This year, demand stood out for products aimed at blocking indoor entry at the source. Total searches for window screens rose 37 percent, while “window screen” and “front door screen” increased 65 percent and 41 percent, respectively. Interest also rose in auxiliary products for managing gaps, such as drain-hole screens, screen stickers and nano screens.
Search terms related to mosquitoes rose 28 percent from a year earlier. By item, mosquito swatters posted the biggest increase at 172 percent, followed by mosquito coils at 66 percent and mosquito nets at 28 percent. A shift also emerged toward seeking lifestyle items instead of traditional insecticides. Searches for “cinnamon stick” rose 57 percent.
An OZIN official said cinnamon contains ingredients that insects dislike and is widely used as a main ingredient in natural insect repellents. The official said demand for cinnamon sticks rose sharply because people can repel insects with a mild, subtle natural scent and also use them as lifestyle interior items.
