Consensys founder Joseph Lubin.

Joseph Lubin (조셉 루빈), CEO of Ethereum-based blockchain technology company Consensys, said Ethereum could shift to a full zero-knowledge proof (ZK)-based protocol within 3 to 5 years.

According to a recent report by The Block, Lubin supports a rollup-centric Layer 2 roadmap but believes Layer 1 itself must be strengthened first for rollups to work properly.

Lubin called the early rollup ecosystem a "forking phase". He said it was a period when various Layer 2s tested their own technologies and entered the market quickly. That led to the side effect of liquidity being scattered across multiple chains. He believes the ecosystem is now moving into an "integration phase" that connects the fragmented chains into one.

He said connectivity between Ethereum and Layer 2 would improve once ZK proofs are fully implemented. Layer 2s are already implementing real-time ZK proofs, and bringing them to Layer 1 could ultimately enable asset transfers across Ethereum-based networks without bridges, he said.

"This way, we can integrate dispersed liquidity," Lubin said.
