Google is considering a plan to bring Samsung Electronics into the production of key components for its next-generation AI chip, The Information reported on Wednesday.

Google is in talks with Samsung on having some elements in its TPU AI chip manufactured using Samsung's 2-nanometre process, the report said.

Google has produced TPUs at TSMC.

As demand for AI chips surges, TSMC's production capacity is reaching its limit, and external customer demand for TPUs is also rising, leaving Google needing more capacity, The Information said.

Google is considering producing the computing engine, a core part of the TPU, on TSMC's 1.4-nanometre process while having Samsung produce the memory I/O die. The memory I/O die connects the main processor and memory and plays a key role in AI chips that must continuously supply data, The Information said.

The chip is expected to enter mass production as early as 2028. But plans could change because it is still in the design stage. Google is working with Taiwan chip design company MediaTek on the design of the next-generation TPU.
