South Korea's Broadcast Media Communications Commission said on Thursday it is seeking to revise a public notice to bring forward by four months the start date for separate storage of resident registration numbers and linked information (CI).
The commission held its 17th full meeting of 2026 on Thursday and reported a revision to the "Standards on the generation and processing of linked information." The revision would change the start date for separate storage from May 1, 2027 to Jan. 1 next year.
Linked information (CI) is electronic information used to identify a specific individual online.
The commission previously delayed the start date until May 2027 after reflecting requests from operators who said they needed time to rebuild and verify technical infrastructure. But after a recent incident in which resident registration numbers and linked information were leaked together, the commission said it decided to pursue early implementation as a pre-emptive response.
The commission said it plans to implement the revision from Jan. 1 next year after gathering opinions through an administrative notice, consulting relevant ministries and conducting regulatory review.
