Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang (젠슨 황) has publicly drawn a line against executives’ explanations that directly tie corporate headcount cuts to AI.

On June 11, TechRadar reported that Huang said some CEOs are creating an overly simple narrative by blaming AI for layoffs.

In an interview with Singapore broadcaster CNA, Huang said, "The narrative that many CEOs connect AI to job reductions is too lazy." He added, "AI only became productive and useful six months ago, so how can you say layoffs two years ago were because of AI?"

The remarks drew attention because the head of Nvidia, which is at the center of the AI boom, criticised using AI as a justification for layoffs. For Nvidia, one of the biggest beneficiaries of expanding AI investment, it could be more advantageous to push a message that AI is an unstoppable force reshaping the broader economy. Instead, Huang put more weight on executives taking responsibility for decisions to cut staff.

In workplaces, adoption of AI tools is spreading rapidly across areas including customer support, marketing and software development. Still, criticism is also growing that it is unreasonable to explain all layoffs as being caused by AI. The outlet pointed to factors such as demand slowing after aggressive hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic, and said a growth slowdown, overestimation of workforce needs and shifts in business priorities may be more direct drivers.

Online reactions were mixed. Users who agreed with Huang said a perception is spreading that AI is not yet at a level to replace people on a large scale. One Reddit user wrote, "The awareness that this technology is not good enough to replace people at scale is trickling down to general consumers." The user also said corporate notices citing AI replacement as the reason for layoffs lose persuasiveness over time, and the market ultimately comes to suspect other reasons for headcount cuts.

Views within the AI industry also differ on the future impact on employment. Huang has emphasised that AI will raise productivity and create new opportunities. He envisions a future in which people work together with AI systems. By contrast, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned that advanced AI could replace many white-collar jobs in the long run.

There is broad agreement on AI’s importance, but no industry consensus on the scale and form of its impact or how to respond. Companies are already accelerating AI adoption, but how they explain the causes of layoffs and restructuring remains contentious. Huang’s remarks are being read as a message that asks again where responsibility lies for management decisions, rather than focusing on AI itself.
