Pearl Abyss' open-world action adventure new title "Crimson Desert" has surpassed 6 million in cumulative sales in the global market, setting a new milestone for Korean console games. It is being seen as having overcome the limitations of a new intellectual property and moved onto a path of long-term success.
Pearl Abyss said on Wednesday that Crimson Desert's cumulative global sales reached 6 million copies. The company said on its official social media that it "sincerely thanks all Grey Mane who came to Pywel and experienced the world in their own ways."
The game sold 2 million copies in a day after release and reached 5 million before a month had passed, then climbed to 6 million in 83 days. It is an unprecedented record in the history of Korean console games, achieved by a new IP in a global console market centered on existing franchises.
Global indicators are also positive. Crimson Desert ranked second in cumulative annual sales in the 2026 U.S. video game sales rankings, according to U.S. market research firm Circana's report released in May.
User retention is also showing a stable trend. U.S. business magazine Forbes praised the game, saying, "Crimson Desert has drawn attention for its high user retention even after launch, a different pattern from open-world single-player games where sales typically drop quickly."
Based on its experience operating the global service for its previous title "Black Desert," Pearl Abyss rolled out rapid updates and patches to improve content and strengthen convenience. It also further enhanced the game's quality and immersion based on its in-house game engine, the "BlackSpace Engine." Recently, it announced a third-quarter update preview and the production of downloadable content, starting a full-fledged effort to extend the game's lifespan.
Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young (허진영) said, "Even though Crimson Desert is a new IP, we are sincerely grateful to users around the world as it has achieved meaningful results in the global market." He added, "To provide enjoyable and better experiences, Pearl Abyss will continue moving forward toward new challenges."
