Global payment technology company Visa said on Thursday it has formed a strategic partnership with ChatGPT developer OpenAI and will jointly build payment infrastructure in an agent commerce environment.

The two companies plan to integrate Visa payments across OpenAI services to safely and smoothly support transactions led by artificial intelligence agents. The partnership is part of Visa's "Intelligent Commerce" initiative. They will also explore ways to use enterprise applications including the Codex developer platform, as well as automated and conversational workflows.

Visa will provide network, tokenisation and risk-management functions. All transactions will take place only within the limits of user-set spending caps, merchant categories and approval requirements. It will maintain security through tokenised payment information and real-time monitoring for fraud, it said.

Jack Forestell (잭 포레스텔), Visa's chief product and strategy officer, said, "AI will drive more fundamental innovation in commerce than the internet or mobile technology," adding, "We are building trusted and secure transaction infrastructure with OpenAI."

Marco Mahrus (마르코 마루스), head of commerce partnerships at OpenAI, said, "Through integration with Visa, we are building agent transaction infrastructure that is safe, transparent and controllable."

The partnership announcement was unveiled at the "2026 Visa Payments Forum" held in San Francisco. Visa also announced AI commerce-related features including an Agent Score, an Agentic Directory and a Large Transaction Model (LTM).
