The Broadcasting Media Communications Commission said on June 10 it recommended that broadcast operators avoid excessively duplicating specific matches in their coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North and Central America, which opens on June 12. It recommended that matches be scheduled sequentially by channel and platform.

The commission said it considered that overlapping schedules in the same time slot could restrict the public's viewing rights and prevent a sufficient variety of programming from being offered. It said matches of high nationwide interest, including games involving the South Korea national team, would be recognised as exceptions to sequential scheduling.

The recommendation follows a proposal by the 9th Universal Viewing Rights Guarantee Committee, which made the suggestion based on Article 76-5 of the Broadcasting Act after holding its first meeting on June 8.

Kim Jong-cheol (김종철), chair of the commission, said, "As the World Cup is a festival enjoyed by the entire nation, I hope for active cooperation from broadcasters so that viewers' choice can be guaranteed broadly."
