From December, the blocking of false and exaggerated advertising in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and medical devices is expected to speed up.
The Korea Communications Commission said on Monday that a revision to the Act on the Establishment and Operation of the Korea Communications Commission, which provides a basis for the Broadcast Media Review Committee to conduct written reviews, passed a cabinet meeting.
Under the current law, measures against online advertisements require in-person meetings and resolutions by the review body, and processing reviews took a considerable amount of time.
The revision includes false ads that abuse new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfakes, as well as deceptive before-and-after comparison ads, in the scope of written review. With written reviews, which allow faster decisions than in-person meetings, authorities will also be able to quickly delete and block ads that impersonate experts or manipulate videos of physical changes.
KCC Chairman Kim Jong-cheol (김종철) said, "We will quickly cut off the distribution chain of illegal advertising in the food and pharmaceutical sectors that are closely tied to people's daily lives." He added, "We will strengthen our technical and institutional response capabilities to build a tight digital safety net that people can feel."
