NCSoft's massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Aion2 has achieved cumulative revenue of more than 100 billion won about 50 days after its launch.
According to the industry on Tuesday, NCSoft officially announced in its Aion2 New Year Live broadcast on Monday that revenue topped 100 billion won as of last week. The game posted 50 billion won in three weeks after its Nov. 19 launch. Based on a simple calculation, it has consistently maintained average daily revenue of more than 2 billion won.
Business division head Inseop So said in the broadcast, "There was good news last week. Thanks to you, revenue surpassed four digits (100 billion won)." He added, "The downward stabilisation curve for revenue is holding much more gently than expected."
The performance is drawing attention because it was achieved despite excluding heavy monetisation models such as probability-based items and instead promoting a "light business model" centred on membership subscriptions. So said he was not sure whether it was possible to deliver revenue performance with such a business model, but the result confirmed that a reasonable business model also works in the market.
NCSoft plans to use the revenue milestone not only as a numerical achievement but also as a foundation to secure users' trust in future new titles. Development PD Namjun Kim said Aion2's success makes users able to have faith in other NCSoft games to be released later, and that he feels a sense of mission.
Separately, concurrent users in the game also appear to be on a continued upward curve along with strong revenue. NCSoft plans to continue updates to create a comfortable play environment, including easing the burden of pet training and strengthening crackdowns on macros, reflecting user feedback.
