Apple has released iOS 26.5.1 for the iPhone 17 series and iPhone Air. The main focus of the update is a fix for a charging bug affecting those models.
On June 1 local time, IT outlet 9to5Mac reported the rollout came ahead of next week’s Worldwide Developers Conference, WWDC 2026, where iOS 27 is set to be unveiled. Apple is also continuing stabilisation work on the currently used iOS 26 line, separate from the next operating system announcement. iPhone 17 users can download iOS 26.5.1 via Settings, General and Software Update.
Apple’s official release notes say the update is focused on resolving charging problems on iPhone 17 models and the iPhone Air. The outlet specified that iOS 26.5.1 is provided to iPhone 17 models and the iPhone Air, and the official guidance also centres on fixing the error.
The issue has been known since late April. At the time, Benjamin Mayo said he experienced a battery drain issue on his iPhone Air, and the related phenomenon was later cited as the background to the update along with the charging problem. Apple often does not detail all changes in its release notes, so small bug fixes other than the charging bug may also be included in this version.
The previous version, iOS 26.5, was released last month. Apple added support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging and new Apple Maps features at the time. Apple often releases a small follow-up x.1 update within a few weeks to address additional bugs, and iOS 26.5.1 follows that pattern. The outlet also said smaller x.1 updates often arrive a few weeks later with additional bug fixes.
Apple is also running beta tests of iOS 26.6. Even if WWDC is held next week, Apple is maintaining a trend of continuing to improve iOS 26 until the full rollout of iOS 27 in the autumn. The update is meaningful in that it shows Apple is also reinforcing stability for existing users ahead of the next version’s unveiling.
For users, improved charging stability is likely to be a more direct change than new features. In particular, the fact that the update was released only for specific device lines shows Apple is responding by selectively fixing issues by model. The next points to watch are how much actual charging errors and battery drain issues decline after iOS 26.5.1, and whether further fixes continue in the iOS 26.6 beta.
