SK Telecom applied a digital twin to an SK hynix semiconductor plant using Nvidia's 3D simulation platform Omniverse.

At the GTC Taipei keynote in Taiwan on June 1 (local time), SKT was introduced as a key partner of Nvidia in the manufacturing physical artificial intelligence (AI) field. The keynote video introduced a case in which SKT and SK hynix used Nvidia Omniverse to bring a digital twin into the semiconductor manufacturing process at production sites.

As part of its goal to build an "Autonomous Factory 2030," SK hynix completed technology verification last year with SKT to apply a digital twin to its semiconductor plant. A digital twin is a technology that recreates an actual factory and equipment in a virtual space to verify in advance the impact of process changes and equipment placement.

SKT said it developed an "agentic digital twin modeling" technology that uses Nvidia's agent toolkit to automatically and intelligently process various data from manufacturing sites to fit a digital twin environment. The company said this can raise efficiency in building digital twins at manufacturing sites.

SKT plans to advance its platform by integrating Nvidia Omniverse libraries to improve loading speeds for large-scale 3D scenes, execution performance, and efficiency in graphics processing unit (GPU) and memory use. It will expand and strengthen its public and business areas as a full-stack AI company with AI solutions across all areas that companies need, from AI infrastructure to models and services.

Cho Ik-hwan (조익환), head of physical AI at SKT, said, "Through cooperation with Nvidia, SKT has confirmed that it can evolve into a physical AI platform in which AI understands and optimises large-scale 3D data at manufacturing sites." He added, "We will expand our role as a physical AI technology partner with Nvidia across various manufacturing industries, including semiconductors."

Mike Geyer (마이크 가이어), Nvidia's head of industrial digital twins, said, "Semiconductor plants are a challenging manufacturing environment that combines large-scale 3D data, complex equipment structures and advanced optimisation requirements." He added, "SKT has demonstrated a high level of technical capability that can apply and validate the Nvidia Omniverse agent toolkit in real industrial fields in such an environment."
