Samsung Display said on May 28 it has succeeded in developing a QD-OLED that delivers 4K resolution and a 360Hz refresh rate at the same time, a first for monitors. The 31.5-inch panel will be unveiled for the first time to customers and media at Computex 2026 in Taipei. The industry has had products that delivered either 4K resolution or a refresh rate of 360Hz or higher, but this is the first monitor panel to combine both specifications.

Combining 4K resolution with a 360Hz refresh rate sharply increases the amount of pixel data that must be processed per second. Pixel charging time increases and the burden on circuit operation grows, so the industry typically lowered refresh rates to 240Hz or below for 4K, or limited resolution to QHD class for high refresh rates. Samsung Display stressed it overcame the technical limit by optimizing the panel circuit and driving system.

The new product includes a dual mode that adjusts resolution and refresh rate depending on the usage environment. In dual mode, switching resolution to FHD can raise the refresh rate to 680Hz. The company said, "You can enjoy the screen without stuttering even in an FPS gaming environment where instantaneous responsiveness is important." The panel also supports VESA's DisplayHDR True Black 600 certification for the first time for monitors.

To obtain the True Black 600 grade, black must be expressed at 0.0005 nits or below while also achieving a combined Red, Green and Blue brightness of at least 600 nits, based on 10 percent APL. This exceeds True Black 500, regarded as the top grade in the existing premium self-emissive monitor market. The panel also includes this year's new technology, a V-stripe pixel structure. The structure arranges R, G and B subpixels in vertical stripes, improving the rendering of character edges and boosting text readability for document work, coding and graphic production.

Samsung Display is in supply talks with more than 10 global customers and plans to begin full-scale mass production in the second half of this year.

Yongwook Jung (정용욱), head of the strategy marketing team at the large display business unit and an executive director, said, "Many customers are evaluating it as a near-perfect product that satisfies everything consumers expect in a premium monitor, including ultra-high resolution and ultra-high refresh rates, high brightness and readability." He said, "We will continue to present innovative products that exceed market expectations through QD-OLED's fundamental advantages in picture quality and continuous research and development."
