Toss Securities said an issue in which a photo of President Lee Jae-myung (이재명) appeared as a preview image when users added its PC home screen as a Chrome browser bookmark was unrelated to hacking or a personal data leak.

The financial investment industry said that on May 27 afternoon, some users found that when they bookmarked the Toss Securities PC web trading system (WTS) home screen on Chrome, a photo of President Lee appeared as the preview image instead of the company’s official logo.

As related screenshots spread online, the possibility of a security problem in Toss Securities’ service or an internal settings error was raised.

Toss Securities explained that the matter was unrelated to external intrusion or hacking. It said there were no issues in its service system and there was no impact on, or leakage of, customer assets, trading information or personal information.

It also said the image shown was not one that Toss Securities registered or provided. It said there was no instance of the image being entered into its system or set to be displayed internally, and that the company’s official logo appeared normally on the actual service screen aside from the bookmark preview.

Toss Securities said it believes the issue occurred during Chrome’s bookmark preview image selection process.

It said Chrome can crawl images within a web page and automatically apply them as the bookmark preview image instead of an image separately designated by the company, and that in this process a user-posted image from a community service displayed on the Toss Securities PC home screen was referenced.

In a notice, Toss Securities also said an image not registered by the company was displayed arbitrarily due to Chrome’s caching policy.

The issue has now been normalised. Toss Securities said it adjusted image size settings within the page, considering that Chrome uses image size as a key criterion when selecting a bookmark preview image, immediately after confirming the issue.

It also improved related settings so that browsers and search engines can prioritise recognising the Toss Securities official logo. The official logo is now displayed normally in the bookmark preview.

Toss Securities said it would strengthen ongoing monitoring and checks to prevent the same issue from recurring, and apologised for the inconvenience.
