Microsoft is building a "Copilot design system" so its Copilot AI assistant can be effectively integrated into work processes.

Neowin reported on May 26 that Microsoft appears to be trying to change its approach not by removing Copilot, but by blending it in so naturally that users do not notice it.

The "Copilot design system" project is led by John Friedman (존 프리드먼), who has newly taken up the role of principal design lead for Microsoft 365. Friedman described it as "an AI-centric design system designed to feel intentional and human."

Microsoft is focusing on having Copilot blend naturally into user workflows across multiple services through the Copilot design system. It said this includes not only screen design but also understanding user intent so it can participate in work flows on its own.

Friedman's team is also designing an interaction pattern called "Throw & Catch." Neowin reported that on screens where Copilot is active, actions are visibly noticeable, while on inactive screens it steps back to give users a sense they are in control.

Neowin reported that Microsoft is developing Copilot to raise productivity by understanding user intent in context, without requiring manual instructions.
