The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity said 10 members of the South Korean delegation won medals at the 26th Asian Physics Olympiad in 2026, held in Busan from May 17 to 25.
The ministry said 208 students from 27 countries took part. The South Korean team won 8 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze.
Gold medals went to Mu-yeon Kim (김무연), Jun-hyun Park (박준현), Chae-min Son (손채민), Ju-ha Oh (오주하), Kwon-heon Lee (이권헌), Seung-jun Lee (이승준), Min-kwon Jung (정민권) and Jun-woo Han (한준우). Dong-geon Lee (이동건) won silver and Min-gyu Song (송민규) won bronze.
All members of the challenge team, selected through an International Physics Olympiad training programme, won gold medals, delivering the best result since South Korea began competing. The dream team, selected through a national competition for high school students excluding science high schools and schools for gifted students, also produced silver and bronze medallists.
The 27th Asian Physics Olympiad featured a 5-hour theory test and a 5-hour experimental test. The questions comprised 3 theory problems worth 30 points and 2 experimental problems worth 20 points.
Yong-il Shin (신용일), chair of the Korean Physical Olympiad Committee at the Korean Physical Society, said he was proud of the students for working steadily despite busy schoolwork and promoting the country’s prestige. He said he hoped they would continue to pursue their dreams and talents in physics.
