The Broadcasting Media Telecommunications Commission said on May 18 it held a meeting with local broadcasters in Gwangju and the Jeolla region at the Gwangju Media Center.

Five local broadcasters attended, including MBC stations in Gwangju, Mokpo and Jeonju, KBS Gwangju and Gwangju Broadcasting. The meeting was arranged to discuss ways to strengthen local broadcasters' public service role and competitiveness amid rapid changes in the media environment.

Executives from the participating broadcasters cited management difficulties, including a slump in the broadcast advertising market. They called for active government support, including deregulation and budget support. They also stressed the need to create conditions for stable content production and stronger competitiveness.

Chairman Kim Jong-cheol (김종철) said he would actively reflect views from the field to lay the foundation for the sustainable development of local broadcasters and push broadcast media policies that people can feel. He said he hoped local broadcasters would faithfully carry out their public-interest roles, including providing locally focused content and delivering disaster broadcasts.
