The Broadcasting Media Communications Committee and the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) held a launch ceremony in Seoul on May 12 for the second term of the Public-Private Council on AI Service User Protection and convened its first meeting, it said.

The second-term council consists of 35 experts from academia, industry, the legal profession and civic groups. Seoul National University School of Law professor Lee Won-woo (이원우) was appointed chair.

The first meeting’s topic was institutional improvements to protect children and adolescents in AI services. Gachon University College of Law professor Eun-jung Kwon (권은정) presented on the status of illegal and harmful information generation involving children and adolescents through AI services, global regulatory trends, and the direction and tasks for domestic institutional improvements. In the discussion that followed, members shared technical and institutional measures to protect children and adolescents and discussed policy directions at an international level.

Bammitongwi has operated the Public-Private Council on User Protection in an Intelligent Information Society since 2021, and expanded and reorganised it under its current name in 2024 in response to changes in the AI environment. The first term, which ran for 2 years, discussed policy directions centred on new user protection issues and proposed soft-regulation measures such as guidelines. The second term will focus on reviewing side effects of AI services and discussing specific institutional improvements and reasonable regulation measures based on technology.

Bammitongwi Chair Jong-cheol Kim (김종철) said it is important to put in place the minimum safety measures to protect children and adolescents while easing unnecessary burdens that hinder AI innovation. He said he would work to create a safe and trustworthy environment for AI services.
