[DigitalToday reporter Jin-ho Lee] The Ministry of Science and ICT's Korea Post expressed deep regret over a recent case in Seoul in which a mail carrier on official duty was assaulted. It urged strong punishment for the perpetrator.

Korea Post said on April 27 that on April 21, a passenger car driver chased a mail carrier delivering mail by motorcycle on a road in Seoul and assaulted the carrier.

The mail carrier was waiting at a traffic signal at an intersection at the time. The assailant got out of the vehicle and used violence while knocking over the carrier's motorcycle. The mail carrier is currently receiving outpatient treatment and psychological counseling after taking sick leave.

Korea Post stressed that violence cannot be justified for any reason. It said harming a mail carrier on official duty was a clear illegal act and urged investigative authorities to conduct a strict investigation into the case.

Korea Post chief Park In-hwan (박인환) visited the post office and offered comfort to the injured mail carrier. "An act that harms a mail carrier on official duty can never be tolerated," he said. "Active cooperation from everyone is needed to ensure the safety of mail carriers who deliver the public's valuable mail," he added.
