Netmarble Game Museum, operated by the Netmarble Cultural Foundation, has been officially registered as a Type 1 specialised museum, the first game museum in South Korea to receive the designation.
Netmarble Game Museum, which opened in March last year, completed its Type 1 specialised museum registration after an on-site inspection of private museums by Seoul city. It proved that games are a cultural asset and had its operating performance and expertise formally recognised by the state.
Building on the registration, the Netmarble Cultural Foundation will hold a free admission event for children from April 28 to May 10 to mark Family Month in May. The museum will operate as usual on Labour Day and Children’s Day, and will be closed on May 4.
The museum revamped its special exhibition in March titled "Play Joseon: One Move (Hand), Beyond the Board". It covers play culture in the Joseon era and the meaning of games today. It offers visitors a stamp experience and a chance to play Seunggyeongdo, reinterpreted as a modern board game. It is running an event on Instagram to solicit names for the exhibition mascot, "tiger". The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on Mondays.
Ki-wook Do (도기욱), head of the Netmarble Cultural Foundation, said the Type 1 specialised museum registration was the result of official recognition of the historical value and expertise of its game materials. He said it will expand unique exhibition content that matches the purpose of establishing the museum and contribute to spreading game culture through exhibitions.
