[DigitalToday reporter Yoonseo Lee] The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could adopt new colours, camera upgrades and design changes, speculation has suggested.
TechRadar reported on April 25 that among the rumours so far, a deep red new colour, a variable-aperture camera and the possibility of unchanged pricing are drawing relatively more attention.
The most noticeable possible change is colour. The iPhone 18 Pro could add a new colour described as “dark cherry,” some sources have suggested. Some tipsters described it as a mix of burgundy, coffee and deep purple tones. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (마크 거먼) was also reported to have mentioned a “deep red” colour for the iPhone 18 Pro. Because changing colours is less burdensome than hardware upgrades, it is being cited as one of the more feasible items.
On the camera, speculation is gaining traction that it will add a variable aperture. If applied, users could adjust the aperture of a single lens to change the range in focus. It could allow control of background blur, and using a wider aperture could help with low-light shooting. Similar claims from multiple outlets, including IT tipster Ming-Chi Kuo, are also lending weight to the rumour. Still, because most users rely on automatic shooting, whether Apple will actually include such a relatively limited feature remains uncertain.
Among design-change rumours, under-display Face ID is being cited as a key possibility. In that case, Face ID components could move under the display, leaving only the camera as a small punch-hole. Some have claimed the Dynamic Island could shift to the left side of the screen, but that is seen as relatively less credible. Under-display Face ID, by contrast, has been mentioned repeatedly by multiple outlets, raising expectations it could be reflected in the product. Even so, the extent of structural changes required would be large, leaving it somewhat less certain than other items.
In communications, the possibility of satellite-based 5G support has been mentioned. Current iPhones support emergency contact services via satellite, but usage is limited and speeds are relatively slow. If a new feature is introduced, high-speed data use could become possible even in areas without signal or Wi-Fi. The impact would be larger if it is allowed for general use beyond emergencies. Still, a claim that the feature would be powered by Apple’s C2 modem has little confirmed information, and it is classified as uncertain.
Pricing, instead, is being discussed as potentially unchanged. Over the past year, the IT industry has faced broad upward pricing pressure as memory costs rose due to artificial intelligence demand, but the iPhone 18 Pro series could launch at the same price as the previous model, forecasts said. GF Securities’ Jeff Pu said Apple is seeking to keep prices unchanged from last year and is pushing measures such as negotiating favourable supply terms and lowering component costs outside of memory.
Whether price stability can continue over the long term remains unknown. Some outlets have said Apple may have only a limited period in which it can restrain price increases. As a result, price hikes are being discussed for the iPhone 19 series, or even for the iPhone 18 series after launch. Based on the current trend, all that can be confirmed is that Apple is placing weight on avoiding a price increase at least at the time of launch.
Overall, among iPhone 18 Pro series rumours, a new colour, a variable aperture and the possibility of unchanged pricing appear to have relatively more support. Under-display Face ID would be difficult to implement, and evidence for satellite 5G remains limited. How much change Apple reflects in the actual product is expected to be the key point to watch for the iPhone 18 Pro series.
