Nintendo is rolling out 'Yoshi and the Mysterious Book', a new title that keeps the Yoshi series’ trademark accessibility while adding adventure elements and a graphics overhaul.

On April 22 local time, IT outlet Engadget reported that the new game has been reimagined as an adventure with stronger exploration and puzzle elements, moving away from the franchise’s simple side-scrolling platform format.

A key point is that it keeps an easy difficulty for children while introducing deeper gameplay and a distinctive visual style aimed at satisfying adult gamers as well.

The most noticeable change is in its visuals. While previous titles emphasized a fabric or handicraft feel, this game adopts the concept of a children’s bedtime storybook. It adds cel-animation effects to hand-drawn watercolor-style artwork to create depth. It also applies stop-motion-like animation effects that feel as if frames are turning, offering immersion like flipping through a real flipbook.

In line with the visual changes, gameplay mechanics have also been significantly revised. Yoshi’s signature moves, including egg throwing, ground pound and flutter kick, remain. A newly added tail-flick function has emerged as central to strategy. With it, Yoshi can carry enemies on its back and interact with various stage elements by using their characteristics, such as making flowers bloom or uncovering hidden secrets. This emphasizes exploration-driven fun by keeping enemies alive and using them, rather than the previous approach of eating enemies and turning them into eggs.

The progression system also adopts a non-linear structure to increase freedom. Players move a magnifying glass to select characters, unlock stages and use stars earned through quests to decide the next destination themselves. After finishing a stage, the game includes a customization element that lets players freely name newly encountered characters through Mr E. (Mr E.), the game’s narrator and the book itself.

On difficulty, Yoshi is set to an invincible state that does not take damage, lowering the entry barrier. But the game maintains tension by placing challenge elements that require precise control, such as stepping on enemies’ heads in a specific musical scale to reach higher places. Because enemies constantly chase players and interfere with the adventure, strategic movement is essential to achieve objectives even without taking damage.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is now taking pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 and is scheduled for official release on May 21. The price has been set at 78,000 won for the packaged version and 69,800 won for the download version. The new title is being described as going beyond a simple follow-up, and is being evaluated as a work that highlights Nintendo’s creative experimental spirit.
