Lablup said it won a presidential citation at the 2026 government awards for information and communications merit at a ceremony held on April 21 at the Korea Science and Technology Center and hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The government award for information and communications merit is presented on Information and Communications Day to organisations and individuals that contributed to the development of the information and communications industry. Lablup said it was recognised for contributions to AI development and dissemination and to creating quality jobs through its proprietary AI infrastructure operations platform technology.
Lablup has developed its AI infrastructure orchestration platform Backend.AI since it was founded in 2015, and it is in operation at about 120 companies and institutions worldwide. Backend.AI integrates and manages heterogeneous AI semiconductors on a single platform, including those from Nvidia, AMD and Intel as well as domestic NPUs. The company also stressed that it applies container-level GPU virtualization for Nvidia GPUs, a technology that splits a single GPU across multiple containers for simultaneous allocation, to raise GPU utilisation.
Lablup CEO Jung-kyu Shin (신정규) said, "I think this is an award received together by the team that has built Backend.AI over the past 11 years and by customers who trusted and used the platform." He said, "AI transformation ultimately happens on top of foundational software that ties models and accelerators together. We will grow Backend.AI into a platform used in more industrial sites so that anyone can use AI easily and scale freely as needed."
