Shinhan Financial Group is promoting employee-participation energy-saving activities and a wildfire response programme to mark Earth Day, it said on Tuesday.

Shinhan Financial carried out energy-saving activities that can be practiced in daily life, such as turning off lights in major buildings and expanding the use of public transport. Some employees took part by commuting on foot or by public transport. It also collected unused items for recycling.

An operating system to respond to uncertainty in energy supply and demand is also running. It is implementing saving measures such as limits on vehicle use, reduced elevator operations and indoor temperature management. It is also running activities including encouraging the use of public transport on Fridays and checking power shutoffs when leaving work.

On wildfire response, it is pursuing prevention and restoration projects together. It is supporting the installation of fire prevention facilities mainly in Gangwon. In areas damaged by wildfires, it is carrying out restoration projects such as tree planting. Employees are taking part in some activities.

A Shinhan Financial official said, "It is important to go beyond one-off actions driven by Earth Day and to embed energy saving and wildfire response as everyday practice." The official added, "Shinhan Financial will continue to contribute to building a sustainable society through practical activities in which all employees participate."
