SpaceX, the private space company led by Elon Musk, has signed a contract with AI startup Cursor and secured the right to acquire it for $60 billion by the end of this year. The contract also includes an option to pay $10 billion as compensation for work the two companies carry out together instead of an acquisition, CNBC reported on April 21.
SpaceX said in a post on X that SpaceXAI and Cursor are working closely to build what it called the world's best coding and knowledge-work AI.
Musk merged reusable rocket company SpaceX and his AI startup xAI in February. He valued the merger at $1.25 trillion at the time. Musk is preparing to list the merged company. If completed, it could be a record-sized initial public offering.
The contract is drawing attention because it leaves open both an acquisition and a payment for joint development work, beyond a simple investment or partnership by SpaceX. Another key point is that cooperation led by coding and knowledge-work AI aligns with Musk's plan for the merged company.
