Samsung Electronics said on April 20 it has launched its air-source heat pump-based home heating solution, the EHS Heat Pump Boiler, in the domestic market. The EHS Heat Pump Boiler uses ambient air heat and electricity to provide space heating and hot water. It can generate more than four times the heat compared with the electrical energy input, making it more efficient and emitting less carbon than fossil fuel-based boilers with energy efficiency below 100 percent, the company said.

The government this month announced a plan to roll out 3.5 million heat pump products by 2035 to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5.18 million tonnes. It plans to invest a 14.4 billion won budget this year and provide subsidies covering up to 70 percent of installation costs per household. Samsung Electronics unveiled the product in line with the plan.

The new product applies high-efficiency refrigerant compression technology to supply hot water of up to 70 degrees Celsius even at minus 15 degrees. An electric heater and anti-freeze valve are installed inside the outdoor unit to prevent the heat exchanger from freezing and pipes from icing. An additional heater is installed at the bottom of the product to assist drainage, preventing sharp drops in outlet water temperature and helping prevent equipment failures even in an environment of minus 25 degrees.

It also improves energy efficiency by installing a large-capacity heat exchanger. Under a 35 degrees Celsius outlet water condition mainly used for underfloor heating, the seasonal coefficient of performance, or SCOP, is 4.9, and it is 3.78 under a 55 degrees condition. It applies R32, which has a global warming potential 68 percent lower than R410A. The fan uses a sawtooth structure to reduce air resistance and delivers a minimum noise level of 35 decibels.

A 7-inch touch display is installed on the controller to monitor and control the entire heat pump system, including heating and hot water supply. When linked to the SmartThings app, users can remotely check indoor temperature and outlet water temperature and adjust settings. Samsung Electronics also provides maintenance services through specialist engineers nationwide.

Sinmun Seon (신문선), an executive director at Samsung Electronics' DA Business Division, said the Samsung Electronics EHS Heat Pump Boiler is a "complete solution" that combines "overwhelming" heating efficiency and performance, a minimum noise level of 35 decibels and ease of use. He said the company will actively participate in the domestic heating electrification rollout project based on differentiated technological capabilities and service infrastructure.
