[Digital Today reporter Jinju Hong] A price-cutting model has entered the cargo electric bike market. Analysts say it could mark a turning point for the spread of practical electric mobility by sharply lowering the entry barrier with a sub-$800 price.

Electrek, an electric vehicle outlet, reported on April 16 that Buzz unveiled the Beekeeper cargo electric bike priced at $799, or about 1.18 million won. That is less than half the price of existing cargo e-bikes, placing it among the lowest-priced products in the market.

Cargo electric bikes have drawn attention as practical transport that can handle grocery runs, hauling and short-distance travel in place of a car. Prices typically range from $1,500 to $4,000, and the upfront cost has been cited as an obstacle to wider adoption. Beekeeper is an example of directly lowering that price barrier.

The design focuses on loading convenience and stability. A 24-inch front wheel and 20-inch rear wheel lower the rear cargo area and stabilize the center of gravity. The structure is intended to make loading and unloading easier and reduce wobble while riding.

The drivetrain combines a 500-watt rear hub motor with a 48-volt 10.4-ampere-hour battery of about 500 watt-hours. It is presented as offering a maximum range of about 64 km per charge and follows the Class 2 e-bike specification that supports both pedal assist and a throttle. Top speed is limited to about 32 km per hour.

Standard specifications are also described as solid for the price. It comes with a Shimano 7-speed drivetrain, mechanical disc brakes and a center-mounted LCD display, and includes a dropper seatpost that is uncommon on budget products. It uses 3-inch-wide tires to try to secure stability and ride comfort across varied road surfaces.

There are also compromises to meet the price. Examples include mechanical rather than hydraulic brakes, a relatively small battery capacity and a hub motor rather than a mid-drive system. It is seen as a value-focused design optimized for daily travel rather than high performance.

The market is focusing on the price signal. If low-cost cargo e-bikes such as Beekeeper emerge, it is because adoption of practical mobility that can replace cars could accelerate. Some analysis also suggests it can provide sufficient performance, especially for short trips and grocery-focused use.

Beekeeper is ultimately a strategic product that prioritizes accessibility over top performance. If this trend continues, some say price competition could intensify across the broader e-bike market.
